Construction and feel

Our cotton rope is a 3-strand twisted construction, available from 5 mm up to 16 mm. It feels firm and slightly stiff in the hand at first, but softens and becomes more flexible with use. The cord can be split apart with a Selma Split Needle when finer strands are needed for detailed macramé work.

Quality and care

Our cotton yarns meet the requirements of STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX, guaranteeing they're free from substances harmful to health and the environment. Cotton rope is washable and easy to clean, but keep in mind it will not float and can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water, so it's not the best choice for projects that need to stay dry or buoyant.

Try a project yourself

New to macramé? Our macramé keychain tutorial uses just 3 mm cotton rope and four simple knots to make a finished pendant, a great first project before moving on to larger wall hangings. Fasten your work to a wooden jig to keep tension even while you knot.

Frequently asked questions

Is cotton rope suitable for outdoor use?

Cotton rope is moisture-resistant and won't harden from moisture, but it does absorb water (up to 30% of its weight) and will not float. It's fine for occasional outdoor decoration, but a synthetic rope is a better choice for anything that needs to stay dry or be used in water.

What is cotton rope used for?

Cotton rope is widely used for macramé wall hangings, plant hangers, curtains, dreamcatchers, home decor, dog leads and sports. Its soft, natural feel makes it especially popular for macramé and other decorative knotwork.

Can I dye or split cotton rope?

Yes, cotton rope takes dye well, and the 3-strand twisted construction can be split apart using a Selma Split Needle when a project calls for finer individual strands.
